Wednesday 16th December: EU better watch out...regulation is coming to town
Good Morning! Today's Media Roundup is brought to you by Esther.
The European Commission has just revealed new rules to regulate the 'Big Tech' firms, including yearly checks on how they are tackling illegal and harmful content, fresh restrictions on how they use customer data, and laws against ranking their own services above competitors' in search results and app stores.
If the companies refuse to comply, there are threats of large fines and break-ups, with the EU saying they could force them to hand over up to 10% of their European turnover.
Facebook has responded saying it thinks the laws are "on the right track," but also that they hope it sets boundaries for Apple, who it accuses of using its power to harm developers, consumers, and the other platforms. Google issued a more cautious response highlighting concerns.
As with all these laws and regulations, if the tech giants don't agree to abide by them, enforcement becomes a huge issue. It wouldn't be the first time a platform has threatened to simply switch a service off because of a region's rules. But there is hope that these rules will influence regulators looking to introduce restrictions of their own in the US, where they have direct influence.
