Wednesday 14th April: International revenues down 16% at Buzzfeed, but losses halved
Good morning! This morning's roundup is brought you by Peter.
Buzzfeed's UK division, which covers operations outside the US, has reported a 16% drop in revenue for 2020, down to £18.9 million from £22.4 million the year before. But the good news - for the business at least - is that aggressive cost cutting has cut losses from £7.4 million in 2019 to £2.9 million in 2020. That's a reduction of more than 60%.
The blame for the £2.5 million drop in digital ad revenues is being put squarely on the pandemic. The reduction in losses is being attributed to 'effective management of cash and costs', including shutting down newsroom operations in the UK and Australia and selling operations in Germany and Brazil.
With Buzzfeed's HuffPost acquisition and the 17 or so HuffPost layoffs announced from that, the cost cutting doesn't seem to be over, but UK directors have said they “do not expect any significant impact” to Buzzfeed UK Ltd following the buyout.
