I’m always glad to hear the ‘plop’ of the Grub Street Journal fall through my letterbox. They may only be on their fourth issue, but Joanna Cummings and our own Peter Houston always manage to pull together a brilliant, beautiful magazine which never fails to make me smile.

If you haven’t yet bought a copy of Grub Street, this piece is just a sample of some of the work they produce. Sadly it doesn’t look as pretty on our site as in the printed magazine, but you get the idea. If you want the full experience, issue #4 is on sale now.

The point here is that unless we all decide that there’s no point in publishing magazines - and that’s never happening - we need to enlist a new generation of magazine people. So what is the state of magazine teaching?

This Nieman Lab piece may be focused on the challenges facing metro newspapers today, but I’d argue there’s something in here for publishers of all shapes and sizes. They discuss looking ahead to a ‘post-search’ world, competing with the NYT’s ‘Death Star’ subscription strategy, and paying attention to story length.

Attendees at a recent Future of Media Finance event think that there’s a tough road ahead for private capital to play a meaningful role in ‘saving’ independent journalism. Jakub Parusinski lists 10 misconceptions, ideas and challenges that the sector will need to address as it grows and starts to play a more meaningful role.

The IJF is one of our bucket list festivals, and one of these years, we hope to be there! If you, like us, missed out then this handy round-up of key takeaways from the Reuters Institute will get you up to speed. I’ve highlighted Aftenposten’s AI audio experiments in this newsletter before so it’s notable to see it top of the list, and how much they’re now investing in new audio products.
