Tuesday 10th November: Quartz is bought by...Quartz

Good morning! Today's Media Roundup is brought to you by Esther.

Just weeks ago it was reported that Japanese data and media company Uzabase was scouting for a buyer for Quartz, just over two years after buying them for $86 million. Today, the WSJ reports that CEO Zach Seward and Editor in Chief Katherine Bell will acquire Quartz in a management buyout which will make the publisher private again.

Terms of the deal haven't been disclosed, but Uzabase CEO Yusuke Umeda will make a personal loan to Quartz, "demonstrating his continued belief in the value of the Quartz business".

It's clear Uzabase haven't been happy with the pace at which Quartz has build up its membership model, and the pandemic hasn't helped. But Seward's own post about this on Quartz is optimistic about their future, and sees the current economic situation as a huge opportunity:

"Now we are all living through an even more consequential moment for the global economy. Our founding values, many of them threatened by events of the past eight years, feel more urgent than ever. The pandemic has tested long-held assumptions about how business is conducted and challenged companies, including our own, to take a long-term view in the face of acute financial pressure...

"It’s a put-up-or-shut-up moment. At Quartz, we are ready to put up."

The pandemic has left some young journalists unable to find internships and training. Freelancing for Journalists came up with a new idea on how to help them get their foot in the door. If you can offer help or know any new grads looking for work experience, check this out.

Spotify has sent out a survey that is testing the waters for people's appetite to pay for podcast-only subscription plans, including access to original shows or exclusive episodes. Given Spotify pay exactly £0 in licensing for podcasts, this is damn cheeky.

November's question to Peter looks at the funding options for starting a magazine, including the pros and cons of investors and crowdfunding.
