Thursday 9th June: Off Zoom and into the room at FIPP Congress

This issue we look at positivity and progress in Portugal, Raconteur's progress from print flop to profit, what the WaPo's visual forensics team is working on now, and why the golden age of podcasting hasn't got started yet.

Today's newsletter is brought to you by Esther.

In a first for us, we're bringing you an episode straight from a conference! Peter has jetted off to Portugal (I'm not jealous at all) for the 2022 FIPP World Media Congress. He's been speaking to attendees at the event to find out what they're hoping to learn, what it's like being back in the room, and how optimistic they are for the future of publishing.

The episode features highlights from FIPP CEO James Hewes, Professor Lucy Küng, Fortune's Jim Jacovides, Tortoise’s Katie Vanneck-Smith, Pugpig’s Jonny Kaldor and Boom Saloon’s Rachel Arthur. If that isn't tempting enough to get you to listen, then I'll leave you with my favourite quote from Hewes' opening keynote:

"The overriding theme of this Congress is positivity and progress. The multitude of new opportunities open to us, together with the possibility of renewal in our legacy businesses means that there has never been a better time to work in this industry never been a more exciting time to be a publisher."

Business publisher and content marketing specialist Raconteur has had a “rollercoaster” few years, from nearly going bust in 2016 after a failed print magazine launch to profit of £2m in 2021. He credits their longer term success to sticking to their guns on quality of output when things were tough financially. (Note: our guest this week is Raconteur's Editor Sarah Vizard if you want to hear how print is driving digital expansion).

The Washington Post launched a visual forensic team less than two years ago. This small, pandemic-born team is now doubling in size, but still working remotely across the US and abroad. Fast forward two years and the team has turned its attention to the situation in Ukraine, verifying the "daily firehose" of content circulating online.

Two podcasts for today! This one features yours truly talking to Charlotte Henry about why I think the golden age of podcasting is yet to come. I also talk a bit about what we're hoping to achieve with the Publisher Podcast Awards, and some of the changes the industry has seen over the past few years.

This week's podcast

This week we talk to Sarah Vizard, Editor of Raconteur. She explains what Raconteur’s unique angle on business stories is in a crowded field, how it uses its print publication to drive digital expansion, and what their recently launched New Voices programme hopes to do with giving writers from under-represented backgrounds a start in business journalism.

Our second Insiders session is on using music and sound effects to enhance your podcast. How do you balance sound effects with interviews, where is best to source effects from, and what do additional layers of audio like music and sound effects add to a podcast? Reby Media's Ross MacPherson will lead a presentation, followed by a Q&A. BUT...there's just ONE space left for the class. Don't say we didn't warn you.
