Thursday 9th July: Social subscriptions and the blame game at Google

Morning! Today's Media Roundup is brought to you by Chris.

Frankly we'd be surprised if most social platforms hadn't taken a look at launching subscription products. Now, as The Verge points out, Twitter appears to be working on a new subs platform, as a job listing confirms the existence of a new team at Twitter working on subscriptions. The project, codenamed Gryphon, is noted to be a first for Twitter, but one that could be used far beyond it.

So far details are scarce, and Twitter then pulled some of those details. Smart money is a model that's more closely akin to that of Patreon, with a rollout of some other subscription tools further down the road. What that means for media organisations is unclear - this might be far more suitable for individual users rather than publishers - but it's further evidence that the age of the subscription is upon us.

DMG Media is throwing its toys out of the pram again, this time accusing Google of cutting its visibility in search results. There are a couple of things to note here, but most interesting is DMG's assumption it deserves a fair playing field at the same time as its business model relies on ruining that same field with info pollution.

TikTok - the hottest social platform with the terrifying privacy implications - is targeting small business advertisers. However, as Reuters report, that is "fraught with challenges, especially after the Trump administration's threat this week to impose a ban on China-based social media apps."

This Galley conversation between Mathew Ingram and The Los Angeles Times' reporter Erin Logan provides some much-needed insight into the realities of being a Black reporter in America. Fascinating read, very recommended.

Throwback Thursday:

Fresh off the news that Permutive has raised $18.5m to help publishers target ads, why not revisit our Conversations episode with Permutive and Dennis Publishing on the value of publishers' first-party data.
