Thursday 3rd September: 40 UK magazines have closed since mid-March

Bonjour. This morning's Media Roundup is brought to you by Peter.

Following Future, Immediate and Bauer, DC Thomson has become the latest UK magazine publisher to accelerate the demise of titles already suffering longstanding 'downward trends'. The Dundee-based publisher closed five magazines that it said were “marginal” six months ago but have become “commercially unsustainable” with the COVID-19 crisis.

Acknowledging an already difficult magazine market, the company said: “The  coronavirus pandemic and resulting changes in consumer behaviour has  exacerbated declines in some cases." A collapse in some sectors of the advertising market has also played a part.

According to Press Gazette, these DC Thomson closures bring the number of UK magazines that have closed permanently since mid-March to 40.

The closure of every single one of those titles is its own unfortunate tale, but the closure of DC Thomson's Scottish Weddings is particularly sad. The award winning title had just re-branded in October last year and was the first mainstream bridal mag to put same-sex couples on the cover.

As always, luck and best wishes to the 20 people that have lost their jobs.

According to the quarterly Digital Publishing Revenue Index from the AOP and Deloitte, digital publishing revenue declined 2.3% year over year, but during the first three months of the year, diversified income - subs, online video and some sponsorship - experienced strong growth.

Unlike the stock market, online advertising is almost completely unregulated. But the millions of stock trades made everyday is nothing compared with the billions of ad trades. That hasn't stopped a leading anti-trust lawyer proposing stock-trading regulatory principles be applied to digital advertising.

Following the killing of George Floyd, many media companies issued statements supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. Two months later, employees are increasingly frustrated that their company's leadership teams are not acting on their words.
