Thursday 22nd July: Why Gen Z hires can boost subscription success

Happy Thursday! This morning's newsletter comes from Chris.

I have lost count of the number of times we've said that legacy news organisations are catering too much to the older end of the population. While the grey pound is powerful, that reliance on elder audiences prevents papers and broadcasters from scooping up new audiences using the topics and platforms that matter most to them.

Key to that is hiring and retaining young talent who can actually connect the newsbrand with younger audiences. On LinkedIn media analyst Lucy Kueng breaks down what she learned from over 100 interviews on exactly that topic, with a particular emphasis on how to bridge the gap between old-school and new-fangled priorities. After all, as she says:

"These cohorts are focused on growth, they are central to digital sustainability. They are not simply digital natives, they are social natives. If you have or want to Gen Y and Z customers, then you need Gen Ys and Zs really involved in key decisions. We need their insights to master a platform world. "

The Independent is going all-in on video. Yep, I was sceptical initially too. But with its Independent TV hub – already a separate section on the site – it's set to expand into OTT with its own app and a greater variety of programming. My latest article for The Drum explains why and how.

Great interview with the FT's editor, looking back at her own career and the wider industry. Hopefully one day we'll be past the need to ask senior women in the industry about sexism - but it's not today, though her answers shed some light on how the FT is tackling it.

The longrunning saga of BBC Three continues, as its proposed return to broadcast TV has been challenged. Rivals and industry bodies have raised concerns that a revived BBC Three could take viewers away from commercial youth-focused broadcasters such as Channel 4. It's a mess, basically.
