Thursday 17th September: The ultimate guide to memberships is here

Morning! Today's Media Roundup is brought to you by Esther.

The Membership Puzzle Project have been hard at work over the past 3 years. We've often shared examples of their work or discussed their case studies on the podcast. The team have now released the Membership Guide, in partnership with The Lenfest Institute and the Google News Initiative.

It's the culmination of the project's years of study and support for membership models in news. The Guide itself is like a 'little course in membership', gathering best practices, common mistakes and the lessons learned from others who have built membership programmes.

It's designed to help at whatever stage your membership is at, whether it's just an idea that you're working out how to implement, or wanting to improve growth and retention on a longstanding program.

We'll certainly be adding this to our reading list!

A write-up of (some of) my chat with Rasmus Nielsen about the Business of News at FIPP’s World Media Congress 2020. Rasmus discussed some of the issues with news publishing that have been exacerbated by the pandemic, and what news organisations have been doing to weather the storm.

Apple's long-rumoured bundle has finally been announced, but News+ is only bundled for the top 'Premier' bundle. Joshua Benton has a concise analysis on Nieman Lab about how the savings break down and how this is unlikely to move the needle significantly on News+ subscriber numbers.

Amazon stomps into the podcast race, launching with 'millions' of podcasts as well as its own original music-meets-true-crime podcast 'Disgraceland'. There's a form here if you want to make sure your own podcast gets added, although no doubt most major podcast hosts will have their own instructions or connections ready over the next few weeks.

Throwback Thursday:

There's been a few examples out this week of publishers using Instagram in smart ways, so my throwback this week is to the LA Times' Adriana Lacy talking about the publisher's Instagram strategy, and why they launched an account dedicated to archival content.

Crazy/Genius' executive producer Katherine Wells advocates talking to writers and editors for new podcast ideas, considering that your listeners aren’t necessarily your readers, and making your brand values clear and consistent.
