Thursday 11th June: 120 Dennis Publishing UK staff facing redundancy

Good morning! Today's Media Roundup is brought to you by Peter.

The Guardian is reporting that Dennis Publishing has begun a consultation process with more than 120 of approximately 480 UK staff. Founded by media maverick Felix Dennis, who died in 2014, the business has a diverse magazine portfolio that ranges from The Week and The Week Junior to Viz and Fortean Times.

Dennis Publishing is now owned by private equity group Exponent, which bough the business two years ago for £166m. A spokesman for the company told the Guardian that it has been forced to make redundancies as previous cost savings measures had not proved to be enough to weather the impact of the pandemic. "Although we are confident that Dennis has a bright future, we have not been immune to its economic impact.”

The pressure on magazine publishers is country wide with huge swathes of ad spend halted during lockdown. Enders Analysis estimates that UK magazine publishers will lose £200m in advertising spend and £52m in copy sales due to the impact of the coronavirus.

Simon Owens is writing about revenues from virtual events in his tech and media newsletter. He asks whether there’s any consumer appetite for virtual events and whether attendance generates real revenue and there's positive news on both fronts.

"Being black right now feels scary and draining both physically and mentally", writes Niellah Arboine for gal-dem. She talked to eight black women who work in the media about what they’re doing to look after themselves when it’s not always possible to switch off.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Brian Morrisey, Digiday's editor in chief, about his award winning podcast. My biggest takeaway? Ask what job your podcast should be doing. The Digiday podcast does several jobs but it's mainly cementing the community and marketing memberships.

Throwback Thursday

In March, back in the before times, I talked to Mark Alker, Publisher of Single Track magazine and Europe’s biggest mountain biking website, singletrackworld.com. We chatted about specialist media success, Marks' love-hate relationship with programmatic and his love-love relationship with community and coffee.

Talking of coffee...

We love you! We love caffeine more.
