Saturday 4th July: My Media Roundup by Justin Pearse, Editor, New Digital Age
Every Saturday morning, we invite a publishing pro to put together their top media links. This week's guest editor is Justin Pearse.
Justin Pearse is editor of New Digital Age, a publication dedicated to brilliance in digital media and marketing.
Justin says:
"If it was ever in doubt, the events of the last few months have shown us more than ever before of the vital need for quality media and journalism in our society and lives.
It remains a tough time to be in media but there are always reasons to be cheerful as innovation continues to flourish in our industry as it rushes to keep pace with the speed of technical change.
These are some of the articles that have inspired, informed and amused me over this frenetic time."
Journalists at the Los Angeles Times and other newsrooms have spoken out about their longstanding experiences of racism, and the impact those have had on the journalism they and their employers do. So is objectivity a relic? And if so, what should we replace it with?
Aside from the increased revenues from committed buyers, reduced risk of working with shady ad tech vendors and the prospect of selling better-performing ads, DPO is ultimately about enhancing the user experience on sites for publishers.
Is engagement with current affairs key to being a good citizen? Or could an endless torrent of notifications be harming democracy as well as our wellbeing?
“[The long-term impact of the pandemic will be that] consumers will become happier and slow down a little and we will also expect brands to change: To have a greater purpose, to care more, to be more altruistic, to be virtual. Media brands that are a force for good and that help consumers to get more out of life will become more important.”
In a homage to MTV’s Cribs, Ogilvy UK vice chairman Rory Sutherland takes us on an illuminating, hilarious and often frankly weird tour of his home, from his self-cleaning toilet to his home videoconferencing rig and Rasberry Pi-enabled replica of his local train station departure board.
