Saturday 13th June: My Media Roundup by Jez Walters, Editor-in-Chief, What's New in Publishing

Every Saturday morning, we invite a publishing pro to put together their top media links. This week's guest editor is Jez Walters.

Jez is the Editor-in-Chief of What’s New in Publishing, the B2B trade title covering the publishing industry. He has edited and managed WNIP since 2012 with a special focus on how publishers can prosper at a time of continual and profound disruption.

You can also find him on Twitter and LinkedIn.

Jez says:

"If the mainstream media wants to regain its place as the go-to source of trusted information, it needs to do better than the recent Surgisphere fiasco whereby the WHO and a number of Governments changed their Covid-19 policies on the basis of flawed data from a company whose ‘handful of employees include a science fiction writer and an adult-content model’. Even the Lancet and New England Medical Journal were forced to apologise and retract the research.

This comes less than two weeks after the United Nations launched ‘Verified’, its Global Initiative to Combat Misinformation which stated, quote, “Scientists and institutions like the UN need to reach people with accurate information they can trust.” Yeah right….let’s start again shall we?

The initiative is calling on people to become “information volunteers” to share trusted content to keep their communities safe. But if even the Lancet can be fooled, what hope have we?"

Bob Hoffman is the author of four Amazon #1 selling books about advertising. He is also one of the most sought-after international speakers on the circuit. As an ad industry veteran with decades under his belt, his blog is a searingly honest and withering takedown of the digital advertising industry especially Silicon Valley. More swear words than a ****.

Publisher Andy Oakes and Editor Justin Pearse were the Centaur Media superstars of the tech boom era 20 years ago. Their B2B title, New Media Age, was untouchable for years and left a deep imprint on the UK digital industry. They went on respectively to become the Managing Director of The Drum and The Drum Works, and have since returned with New Digital Age.

I enjoy studying economics in my free time (odd I know), especially Austrian economics as an antidote to the Keynesian money printing madness now enveloping the world. Weimar Germany anyone? Maloney’s Hidden Secrets of Money series is a great introduction to where we could possibly be headed. Incidentally, Maloney is also a designer and was selected for one of only five permanent exhibits at the opening of the 20th century design wing of London’s V&A. Respect.

I am a huge fan of motorcycling, and Bike magazine is my favourite of the genre. It’s delivered via Readly’s ‘all you can consume’ magazine platform which on my Samsung tablet is a perfect reading experience. I’ve been intrigued to see how Editor Hugo Wilson has been navigating the pandemic without actually testing and riding bikes. It’s been anaemic to be honest, and I look forward to them getting out on their Panigale’s soon. Retro articles don’t cut it.

I’ve been stuck out in Spain for the pandemic and the Costa Del Sol’s Olive Press publication has kept me mildly amused during Martial Law. Full of shaggy dog stories and the like, the title isn’t going to win any awards anytime soon. But it kept me abreast of developments on a need to know basis, including the fact you can’t walk slowly to a bank in Spain without incurring a 1,000 Euro fine. You’ve been warned.
