Monday 3rd August: Crisis, what crisis? Facebook revenue up 11%
Welcome to your week. Today's Media Roundup is brought to you by Peter.
If you were feeling sorry for poor old Mark Zuckerberg this week, dragged in front of those mean old US politicians, don't worry he's doing OK. As Mr John McCarthy points out in The Drum, during one of the worst economic periods in modern times, The Social Network has posted 11% revenue growth.
It seems neither global pandemic nor ad boycott can stop Facebook's upward trajectory. With more than 3 billion monthly users across it app portfolio. Daily Active Users and Monthly Active User numbers are up 12% annualized, matched by an 11% YOY increase in revenue, to $18.7bn.
Why has the ad boycott not made more of a dent? Well, 1,100 advertisers have stayed away including some of the biggest brands in the world. But Facebook has another 9 million “active advertisers”, delivering 80% of its ad revenue, to keep the wolf from the door.
If you're a shareholder, good news, your shares rose 5%. If you're a mere mortal, like us, you're just left scratching your head thinking 'WTAF?'
Is The Guardian, with one of world’s most sophisticated digital news operation, thinking about stopping printing papers (again)? Colin Morrison takes a look at the recent job cuts and considers the likelihood of a switch to digital only.
One-time micropayments champion Blendle is being acquired by French ‘digital kiosk’ player, Cafeyn. The Dutch aggregator switched to a €10/month subscription model last year and had secured around 50,000 paying subscribers.
Affiliate revenue isn't anything new for Buzzfeed, but the publisher is now letting shoppers checkout directly from its new shopping site as consumers become more comfortable with buying away from specific eCommerce destinations.

Unfortunately it looks like Sarah has been one of the casualties of cuts at Immediate Media. Give this episode a listen and hear about the excellent work Sarah did on In The Moment's award-winning podcast, and then if you've got a job going, give her a call.
Even although we're taking a little break, you can still buy us a coffee. We'll love you just the same ❤️❤️❤️
