Monday 24th August: The publisher fightback against Apple begins

Welcome to your week! This morning's roundup is brought to you by Chris.

The publishers are revolting! Some of them, anyway. Apple, currently embroiled in a high-profile fight with Epic Games over its app store terms, now has to fight on a second front. In a letter to Tim Apple, Jason Kint of DCN has argued that there needs to be more favourable terms for publishers on the app store:

"The terms of Apple’s unique marketplace greatly impact the ability to continue to invest in high-quality, trusted news and entertainment particularly in competition with other larger firms."

The reality is that Apple's intragnizent approach to the app store means that it has always been the ultimate walled garden. Whatever goes on within the store happens on Apple's turf: the metaphor of publishers being the digital serfs on platforms' land has never been more apparent than here. I doubt that anything short of government influence is going to change anything here, such is the power imbalance, and it's unlikely that entreaties about the importance of high-quality news will make a difference.

The Yorkshire Post is launching a supporters' program that, like the Guardian's, is all about keeping access to its content free for everyone. In this letter its editor James Mitchinson makes the case for support, and we wish them the best - it's vital that we find a way to keep journalism free to access for those who need it.

Gosh, who could have foreseen this? This is certainly shocking, I am floored. We could never have expected this, what a swerve. Whoever would have seen Facebook putting business ahead of ethics? What a surprise. We're all very shocked over here, I can tell you. My goodness.

Mobile ad blocking may still be on the rise but it appears to have plateaued elsewhere, according to Lara O'Reilly for Digiday. Good news for ad-reliant publishers - though not an excuse for them to double down on privacy violation.

Today's throwback:

We're back from break with a new episode a week today! In the meantime, this evergreen episode features the Guardian’s director of philanthropic & strategic partnerships Rachel White talking about finding ways of funding independent journalism.
