Friday 25th November: Former Sun editor thinks the title's days are numbered
Good morning! Today's newsletter is brought to you by Peter.
Apologies for firing a picture of Rupe' at your inbox before you've even had your coffee. But in my defence, how could I lead on anything but the Press Gazette comment piece from Kelvin MacKenzie in which he says The Sun is doomed because it's capitulated to 'lefty activists'. 😆😆😆
To be fairer to Mr MacKenzie than he's ever been to anyone, he has a job to do; he's trying to drum up interest in his 2023 launch The Daily Disclosure. This is the usual print is dying BS (we know) but with a nasty 'Woke' wrapper to stoke up the Culture War that sits at the feeble beating heart of his business plan.
MacKenzie believes 'centre right' outlets (even Elmo over at Twitter) have lost ads because activists have threatened boycotts over a Gammon-flavoured list of social issues. Apparently the left can publish 'any old nonsense about the skint and the dim' and the ads 'pour in'. Right enough, that'll be why the UK press is such a bastion of social justice. 🤡🤡🤡
Journalism.co.uk is reporting on DAN, a US hyperlocal newspaper that has built a sustainable revenue stream by charging its 500 subscribers $10 a month for a low-tech newsletter. Hopefully there are some lessons in here for The Daily Disclosure team. I'm sure they can find 500 outraged 'centre-right' supporters that will stump up to help them keep their anti-woke lights on.
In yesterday's newsletter, Chris wrote about what he saw as a first-mover advantage for publishers that were early into NFTs. Despite the collapse in the market, there could still be opportunities and Twipe has brought together four examples of how pioneering publishers are using this crypto play to make some cash.
Survey looks to guide development of mis/disinformation training for UK journalists — www.surveymonkey.co.uk
PA Training wants to know what current and incoming journalists need to know about dealing with mis/disinformation. They want as many diverse perspectives as possible and are particularly interested in knowing how journalists are responding to, reporting, verifying and fact-checking mis/disinformation. Tell them what you need.

This episode we're joined by Simon Owens to explore how publishers are weathering the 'crypto winter' and general disenchantment around emerging technologies. Will early experiments in the metaverse pay off for publishers, and why is AI image generation so exciting? Listen to find out!
Our annual report launches on Wednesday November 30th! It's taking a look at everything that's occurred in media over 2022 - so it's a small task, obviously. You can join us and a few very special guests for the launch event. We'd love to see you there!
