Friday 12th November: Parental leave is broken, and it's costing you talent

Good morning! Today's newsletter is brought to you by Esther.

The UK (where I live) has quite generous maternity leave. But there are still huge chunks of this that ring uncomfortably true.

"Why do we still structure our newsrooms like everyone has a wife at home?" writer Alex Sujong Laughlin asks. "I’ve always imagined a clock ticking backwards from the date of my first pregnancy indicating the amount of time I have left to make something of myself. Of course, this is ridiculous. But talking to working parents in journalism, it only feels realistic."

The pandemic has only exacerbated these trends. A report earlier this week - summarised here by the Drum - highlights how it is mothers who are most likely to have lost, or had to leave their job since March 2020. Those that remain employed are shouldering a heavier burden of day-to-day tasks.

If you need a reminder of what this is costing the industry in terms of talent, our interview with Terri White about the conflict between parenting and the 'best job in the world' is worth a read / listen.

Harvard Business Review has 13M followers on LinkedIn, built up through the sharing of up-to-date news as well as the careful curation of archived content. Such has been the success of HBR’s LinkedIn outreach, it has launched its own TV channel on the platform. It's a publication made to do well on a business-focused social media network, but there are still some interesting lessons here for everyone else.

This is a great initiative from Digital Content Next and Curiosity Lab founder Michael Tennant. He interviews some of the leaders on the front lines of the diversity, equity and inclusion movement, exploring how they are leading the charge for change. The first in the series talking to Edward Gonzales, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion lead for Heliophysics at NASA is live now.

The Reuters Institute has released a new report looking at how the newsroom is changing, with respondents saying companies are now mostly on board with the shift to hybrid working. However, although most feel that their news organisation is doing a good job with the gender balance, fewer say the same about ethnic diversity or attracting those from less advantaged backgrounds.
